Ingrid Fliter es una pianista argentina que en 2006 fue la quinta ganadora y la primera mujer en recibir el prestigioso Premio Gilmore. La escucharemos interpretar música del compositor polaco Frédéric Chopin. Su gran Sonata en si menor es del año 1844 cuando la reverencia de Chopin por Bach estaba en su cénit. Aunque fue escrita con estilo romántico, esta pieza muestra el amor que tenía Chopin por la música del siglo 18. La Sonata para piano número 3 en si menor Opus 58 de Frédéric Chopin es interpretada por Ingrid Fliter.
Ingrid Fliter is an Argentinian pianist who in 2006 was the fifth recipient and the first woman to win the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award. Here she is playing music by the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin. His great B minor Sonata dates from 1844 when Chopin’s reverence for Bach was at its height. Although written in the Romantic style, this piece shows the love that Chopin had for the music of the 18th century. The Piano Sonata number 3 in B minor Opus 58 by Frédéric Chopin is played by Ingrid Fliter.

Enric Morera nació en Barcelona en 1865, pero sus padres lo llevaron a Argentina cuando tenía dos años. Regresó a Cataluña a la edad de 16 años, donde pronto se hizo amigo con Isaac Albéniz. Ambos estudiaron bajo Felip Pedrell. Escribió más de 800 obras en su vida, incluso este “Andante Religiós” para conjunto de cuerdas. Escucharemos a la orquesta de cámara Concerto Málaga bajo la batuta de Massimo Paris.
Enric Morera was born in Barcelona in 1865, but his parents took him to Argentina when he was two. He returned to Catalonia at the age of 16, where he soon became friends with Isaac Albéniz. They both studied under Felip Pedrell. He wrote over 800 works in his lifetime, including this “Andante Religiós” for string ensemble. We’ll hear the Concerto Málaga chamber orchestra under the baton of Massimo Paris.

La próxima pieza se trata de la leyenda antigua griega de la Sibila, que era una mujer que podía predecir el futuro bajo la influencia de una deidad. La más famosa fue la Sibila Délfica (de Delfos), pero la leyenda también pasó a través de otras civilizaciones orientales antiguas. Los cristianos antiguos creyeron que sus profecías pronosticaban la llegada de Cristo y el final del mundo. La primera música religiosa basada en la leyenda comenzó hace más o menos 1000 años y se cantaba en Latín. Las versiones que siguieron después fueron escritas en el idioma vernáculo. The next piece concerns the Ancient Greek legend of the Sibyl, a woman who could predict the future under the influence of a deity. The most famous was the oracle at Delphi, but the legend was passed down through other ancient eastern civilizations. Early Christians believed her prophesies foretold the coming of Christ and the end of the world. The first church music based on the legend started about 1000 years ago and was sung in Latin. Later versions were in the vernacular. Here’s the Provençal version sung by soprano Montserrat Figueras, along with La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hespérion XX, directed by Jordi Savall.

La “Introducción y Rondo Capriccioso” es una famosa obra para violín y orquesta escrita por el compositor francés Camille Saint-Saëns en 1863 para el violinista español Pablo de Sarasate. Como varios otros compositores franceses tales como Eduard Lalo y Georges Bizet, a Saint-Saëns le fascinó la música de danza española y escribió varias obras con ese estilo. La “Introducción y Rondo Capriccioso” requiere una técnica de virtuoso por parte del violinista. Itzhak Perlman acepta el reto en esta grabación con la Orquesta Filarmónica de Nueva York dirigida por Zubin Mehta.
The “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” is a famous work for violin and orchestra written by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns in 1863 for the Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Like several other French composers such as Eduard Lalo and Georges Bizet, Saint-Saëns was fascinated by Spanish dance music and wrote several works in that style. The “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” requires virtuoso technique on the part of the violinist. Itzhak Perlman is up to the challenge on this recording with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta.

Otro músico inspirado por la música de España fue el compositor alemán Moritz Moszkowsky. En 1876, escribió una serie de danzas españolas. Quizá no son tanto, tanto, tan auténticas, pero sí tienen un cierto estilo y fueron muy populares en su tiempo. Las primeras cinco danzas del libro 1 son interpretadas por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres, bajo la dirección del español Ataulfo Argenta.
Another musician inspired by Spanish music was the German composer Moritz Moszkowsky. In 1876, he wrote a series of Spanish Dances. They may not be super-authentic, but they do have a certain flair. They were very popular in their time. The first five dances from Book 1 are played here by the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of the Spanish conductor Ataulfo Argenta.

Manuel Ponce fue un compositor mexicano que estudió tanto en México como en Paris, bajo Paul Dukas. Su estilo musical fue muy influenciado por la música europea aunque la mayoría de sus melodías y ritmos tienen sus raíces en la música folklórica de su querido México. Sus obras para guitarra incluyen un grupo de preludios y varias sonatas además de un hermoso concierto para guitarra “Concierto del Sur” escrito para su buen amigo Andrés Segovia. Otra obra inspirada por Segovia es “Folía de España”, un grupo de 20 variaciones y fuga sobre una melodía antigua de Portugal y España llamada, “La Folía.” Escucharemos una interpretación de John Williams.
Manuel Ponce was a Mexican composer who studied both in Mexico and in Paris, under Paul Dukas. His musical style was greatly influenced by European music although most of his melodic and rhythmic material has its roots in the folk music of his beloved Mexico. His works for guitar include a set of preludes and several sonatas as well as a beautiful guitar concerto “Concierto del Sur” which was written for his close friend Andrés Segovia. Another work inspired by Segovia is “Folía de España” a set of 20 variations and fugue on an old tune from Portugal and Spain called “La Folía.” We’ll hear an interpretation by John Williams.
