About KBBF and the Bilingual Broadcasting Foundation, Inc.
Commencing broadcasts May 31, 1973 KBBF 89.1 FM was the first fully bilingual, bicultural educational radio service in the United States.
The Bilingual Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. (BBFI) was created in August 1971 by several college students and community leaders with the specific purpose of operating an educational radio station that would perform public services. It received funding from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation. Below is a picture of Ethel Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy's widow, visiting BBFI and meeting one of the founders, Guido del Prado.
Forty years later KBBF continues in its mission:
To create a strong multilingual voice that empowers and engages the community to achieve social justice through education, celebration of culture and local and international news coverage.
KBBF's powerful antenna atop Mount St. Helena in Napa County reaches 18 counties in Northern California.
