First I would like to thank Genevieve Navar Franklin for presenting these programs so wonderfully during the past year. We miss Genevieve a lot and wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors.

Let’s start off today’s program with some music of the 16th century.

Unlike his contemporaries such as Ginastera and Chávez, the 20th-century Argentinian pianist and composer Carlos Guastavino wrote in a purely tonal, romantic style, with strong influences from Argentinian folk music. While he wrote several works for orchestra, his reputation is based almost entirely on his songs. He has been called “the Schubert of Argentina.” Here are two examples, “Viniendo de chilecito” (The little chili coming) and “En los surcos del amor” (In the tracks of love) sung by the tenor Ulises Espaillat accompanied by Pablo Zinger on the piano.

Enrique Casals was the younger brother of the famous cellist Pablo Casals. They both were fascinated by the folk music of their native Catalonia in Spain, such as the “Sardana,” which is the national dance. It is danced in a circle to the music of a “cobla” a traditional street band consisting of pipe and tabor, brass, double bass and a variety of wind instruments.

The next work on the program is performed by the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. This is a very interesting orchestra – it’s the culmination of an entire system of youth and children’s orchestras that takes kids off the streets and teaches them to play classical music. The Conductor of the following work, Gustavo Dudamel, rose up through the ranks of this system, a system that everyone calls simply “el sistema”. Today he is the Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and is generally considered the hottest conductor in the world of classical music today. He has said <quote> “I have no doubt that music changed my life. Many of the kids my age went on to become involved with drugs and crime. That didn’t happen to the ones who played music.”

Let’s see how the products of “el sistema” perform perhaps the most famous classical work of all time, Beethoven’s Symphony number 5 in C minor, Opus 67. Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.
